Healthier snack options seem like it is out of our reach.
The stuff that is recommended to us, we just plain to do not want to eat. We aren’t used to eating that healthy, so of course our taste buds are going to think it is either gross, or not going to satisfy us!
I don’t know about you, but I had the worst time ever when starting my healthier eating journey, because I constantly craved sugary or salty foods (depending on day). I felt like a mess. It made me give up so many times, because I thought healthy eating just wasn’t for me.
But then I found some options that worked.
Ultimate Goal for Healthier Snack Options
Okay, so I know the list I am going to give you is still not exactly considered healthy. Which means “consume in moderation” is important here.
But the products I mention are what I like to call “transition foods”. These are healthier than the option you originally would have picked because of better ingredients, lower sugar, or other factors that I will be talking about.
When you eat these, your craving will be satisfied. And it will allow your taste buds time to adjust to a healthier palette. Which means, your cravings for the seriously bad stuff will start to go away, and set you on a path to be able to eat the ultimate goal snacks.
Your ultimate goal snacks should be nuts, seeds, fruits, and veggies.
But most of us coming from a high sugar diet, loaded with fried and greasy foods, and not eating any fruits or vegetables (and what the heck are seeds?!) NEED transition food like this, otherwise we won’t do it.
And btw, I did finally kick my sugar and salt addiction. And these are the exact transition products I used to do it.
Healthier has many different meanings depending on who you ask. If you ask personal trainers, healthier means lower carb and higher protein. If you ask doctors, it means lower calories. If you ask dietitians and the nutrition community, the focus is on whole foods that don’t have just empty calories, as well as less sugar.
I generally go with what I was taught by dietitians in school and what the top nutrition experts say.
So when I say these are “healthier options”, I mean these are not just complete empty calories that will store as fat or overwhelm your liver. The ingredients are better for you and most will have much lower sugar counts.
But I specify whether many of these have lower calories or carbs too.

These taste almost just like the regular peanut butter cups. Only these have less sugar, less calories and more potassium and iron. It also contains no corn syrup or hydrogenated oils like the original does.

Besides having no corn syrup, no artificial colors, dyes, or flavors, these also have less calories, less fat, about half the sugar and carbs, and a lot more iron, these peanut gems taste so much like peanut m&ms, you won’t even miss the real thing!
4. Unreal Milk Chocolate Gems
As with the peanut gems, these don’t have the corn syrup, or artificial garbage that is in regular m&ms. These also boast less calories, less fat, half the sugar! Did I mention these also do not contain any milk products? Vitacost does not sell them, and Amazon’s prices were steep, which is why I linked to Thrive Market here.
5. Chocolove Almonds & Sea Salt
Dark Chocolate is much better for you than milk chocolate is. Not only that, the ingredients in this bar don’t have the additives, milk products, and artificial flavorings as they do in a typical chocolate with almonds bar. This bar also boasts more fiber, a lot less sugar, and more vitamins and minerals than the other guy.
6. Back to Nature Double Creme Cookies
I can’t buy these anymore. I will eat the entire box by myself in two days. These have no high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors, which is the most important thing to look at when first transitioning to healthier eating (in my opinion).
7. Back to Nature Chocolate Chunk Cookies
These are another addicting one. Back to Nature products are so unbelievably good. I like them so much better than the “mainstream brands”. They don’t have the Hydrogenated Oils, High Fructose Corn Syrup, and artificial flavors, which means these will be much friendlier to your body than the other brands.
8. Earth Balance Cheddar Squares

These have about half of the ingredients, no corn syrup, and no artificial ingredients or flavors. They have double the protein and fiber, making these a lot more filling than the other brands. They also have more calcium, potassium, and iron, which means it isn’t going to be just empty calories.
11. Skinny Pop Popcorn
If you can find popcorn that is without the artificial stuff, it makes for a very healthy snack. It can help your salt cravings while giving you fiber, so you are fuller, faster. This is the brand I keep in my pantry because it has limited ingredients and tastes really good.

Have a cheese puff addiction? I understand. I used to as well. This brand is the best substitution out there. It doesn’t have the artificial colors or flavors. They also have less sodium, more fiber, more protein, and a lot more nutrients! Which means it isn’t just complete empty calories you are eating, so your body will be happier.
14. Highkey Mini Cookies
These cookies were a favorite of mine and my husband’s when we first transitioned to eating healthier. These are a really good option if you are diabetic, have a gluten intolerance, or on a keto diet. The taste is really good and the ingredients are much purer than other keto cookies out there. Plus you don’t have to worry about sugar content!
15. Siete Nacho Tortilla Chips
Have you ever looked at Doritos ingredients? There are over 30 ingredients, and half of them are artificially made! These have less than half the ingredients, and it is all names you would recognize. Which means these have more fiber and more nutrients as well.
16. Late July chips
So Lay’s has gotten pretty good about eliminating a lot of artificial junk in their chips, which is a great thing. But Late July takes it one step further by making these not only with good ingredients, but are also lower in calories, fat, and higher in potassium than the Lay’s version. I personally love the sea salt and vinegar version.
17. Back to Nature Fudge Mint Cookies
These are 100% the most addicting cookies I have ever encountered. These are completely dairy free and don’t have the corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, and artificial flavorings. These also are lower calorie and fat, as well as twice the iron and potassium of other mint cookies.
18. Blake’s Rice Crispy Treats
These not only don’t contain the corn syrup or artificial flavors, but with less calories, sodium, fat, and sugar, it also contains some super seeds that most people don’t get in their diet! I linked to Amazon below, but Thrive Market has them MUCH cheaper.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I loved almond joys and mounds bars. These are a great replacement and help me not miss those at all. These don’t have the corn syrup or artificial stuff in them and also don’t have all the sugar!
